Surprising New Metric of Aesthetic Medicine Success & Other Top Takeaways from Our Time at #TSPS2026

A conversation about “bringing the joy back” sparked our biggest TSPS 2026 takeaway: true practice success means so much more than growth, revenue & efficiency.

Posted on October 5, 2026

Some of the best conversations at a conference happen nowhere near a stage.

At the 2026 Texas Society of Plastic Surgeons (TSPS) Annual Meeting, Julie Mueller from the Symplast team was sitting with a surgeon, who coincidentally happened to be a Symplast client, when the conversation turned to charting. The surgeon mentioned that Symplast’s AI note-taking had become a real time-saver for her, and that even when there were bumps along the way, the support from the Symplast team had been excellent.

Time savings are great, of course. But that wasn’t the part we kept thinking about.

Her next thought brought us a moment of epiphany.

She said that taking some of the documentation burden off her team had helped “bring the joy back.” Her staff could spend more of their day doing the patient work they actually loved instead of getting buried in charts.

“Bring the joy back.”

That line followed us around for the rest of the meeting.

There was plenty of technology at TSPS, with more vendors and industry partners supporting the meeting than we’ve seen before and no shortage of new tools on display. But the more interesting conversation was about what all of it is ultimately supposed to accomplish: helping surgeons and their teams build practices that work better for the people inside them.

You could see that shift in the program, too. The business of aesthetics continues to take up more space alongside clinical education. Operations, marketing, patient experience, growth and technology are becoming part of the same conversation, because running an exceptional practice requires more than exceptional clinical work.

That gets to the heart of what we mean at Symplast by Beautiful Business.

A successful practice shouldn’t become harder to live with as it becomes more successful – although that is too often a reality that practices face. The growth you worked for shouldn’t consume the freedom, attention and sense of possibility it was supposed to create.

The real metrics of success are often more personal than revenue or efficiency alone. Is your team energized or exhausted? Does growth create opportunity or simply more complexity? Are your systems giving you time back, or giving you more things to manage?

Those questions around success are becoming part of the business of medicine, too.

01  •  The next generation

The next generation is already thinking differently

One of the most encouraging things about TSPS was how present the residents and medical students were throughout the meeting.

And many of them are already thinking about their careers in ways that go well beyond clinical training.

Social media came up again and again. Some residents and students are already building substantial audiences, and a few are even monetizing those audiences before entering practice.

That’s a meaningful change.

Previous generations often learned the business, marketing and brand side of medicine once they became practice owners. This generation is arriving with an instinctive understanding that reputation begins long before a patient ever schedules a consultation.

They’re learning to be surgeons while also learning how to educate, communicate, build trust and create community. It will be fascinating to see the practices they build from that foundation.

02  •  The community

A community investing in what comes next

That may have been our other big takeaway from Houston: the Texas plastic surgery community is thriving.

There was an easy mix of established surgeons, younger physicians, residents, students and industry partners throughout the meeting. It felt like a community not only celebrating where the specialty is today, but actively investing in where it goes next.

Congratulations to Dr. Don Collins as he steps into the TSPS presidency, and thank you to outgoing president Dr. Camille Cash, the organizing committees and everyone who made another great meeting possible.

We left Houston still thinking about those four words: bring the joy back.

There will always be another technology to evaluate, another way to market a practice and another opportunity to grow. Those things matter! But growth alone isn’t the point.

The practice you build should make room for the things that made you want to build it in the first place: meaningful work, great patient relationships, a team that enjoys coming to work and a life that doesn’t have to wait until the charts are finished.

If the next generation of aesthetic practices can become more sophisticated without losing that, that feels like progress worth pursuing.

Thanks to the TSPS community for the reminder and the motivation to keep building around what matters most to you.
